It's just the difference in the league nowadays.

If Stockton or Malone played today, they most likely wouldn't stay their whole careers in Utah. The Nature of the league is to become a FA. You can earn more money, get wined and dined, and be more in charge of your career (and who you play with).

This wasn't as prevalent until the 2000s.
