Saying it incorrectly saves a whole one syllable. Think of the time that can be
saved over a lifetime by saying that incorrect. I'm guessing for those who DO say it incorrectly, that will likely save them 3 or 4 seconds over their entire lifetime.

I read "he is in hospital" in a Russian accent. The phrasing makes sense that way.

Hmm, maybe you care about this sort of thing more than you let on?

For the same reason we say "he is in jail" instead of "he is in the jail"

but the true tragedy here is the loss of the passive form

I also hear "to be" omitted quite often. Example: "these clothes need washed"

That's a huge one here in Utah. That grates on me as well. My wife and I give each other "the look" when we hear it

You guys sound fun to hang out with.

Because people who abuse the English language are much more fun than those who don't

Yes, people who are less uptight are typically more fun to be with.

Because coming to an anonymous internet community to discuss grammar abuse is proof that someone is uptight

You're very quick to leap to judgment. You must be fun to hang out with.

Don't try chewing gum and walking, you might struggle with that as well.

I'm sorry if this post hit a little too close to home, so you have become defensive.

You're assuming that the English language is standardized and not subject to change. Linguistically speaking, not so.

No, I'm not assuming that at all. You're assuming that I'm assuming, and you really shouldn't assume.

You said it yourself, it has become popular and is in common usage. Right now there is no official body that sets
