just two options (run, pass) when each could easily be a triple threat by adding the "punt option," thus essentially making each down a much more lethal "hexa-threat?"
As long as you were willing to add the threat of punting on any down, teams would be forced to defend against that, thus being forced to commit more players to a zone "return" scheme rather than man-to-man, as a well-trained kicker could target punts towards non-suspecting "defensive backs", who if they didn't cleanly field the punt, (which most likely would happen as their backs would be turned if they are playing man-to-man) would give up easy "turnovers", creating new "first down" opportunities deep in opponents territory.
I mean, if we're going to get innovative, I saw we go all the way.
