I got destroyed by Utah. Paying roughly 1/3 of what my federal taxes are.
Makes me consider moving to a state without income tax. Washington and Texas look tempting.

Utah did not account for the loss of personal exemptions on the Federal side.

I doubt it was "by accident." Pretty sure they knew exactly what they were doing, and said nothing about it.

Think I heard this as well from some co-workers. Seems to be the most likely explanation. Utah dropped the ball.

so if you ended up itemizing your deductions instead of taking the standard

Yes. Deductions are different than the personal exemptions.

So it's hard for me to tell because we adopted twice and this is the first

The good news is that Utah is not massively over funded and has a $2B surplus

Mine went up 10% ($2500 to $2800) from last year.

Yep, I paid over a $1k more. It was a bit ridiculous. Federal was about the same

We paid an extra $400 or so this year, but I wouldn't say they exploded

I think you pay more in property tax in Texas than income+property taxes in Utah
Star-Lord
2/11/19 2:55pm
Might be true, but your property also costs less to purchase in the first place.

Depends entirely on your income and property value.

Tell me this, how do you think those states get tax revenue?
Chester Copperpot
2/11/19 2:55pm
Through other avenues, including property and sales tax. I'm well aware.

Did your actual tax jump or did your refund just do down?
Chester Copperpot
2/11/19 3:03pm
That's a tricky question. I made about 30% more in 2018 than in 2017.

Rate went up 21% for me. First time I have ever owed. I usually get about $1300

Our state increased $1300. We added a second income ($17k) though.
