The claim that he was diagnosed with autism at that age is a clue
that this is nonsense. I mean, you could be diagnosed at that age with Autism, but it presents itself much earlier on in life than that.
Living in an abusive home, and moving around a lot can really stunt a child's social, emotional, and educational development. Stability and feelings of safety can serve to reverse that trend rather quickly.
Many children are diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, and other often comorbid things when in fact they are really just kids living in an abusive environment.

My SIL has been telling everyone that my infant son (who was diagnosed with mild scoliosis) has multiple sclerosis.
