Honestly, I think the players union ends up hurting the players.
Several younger players, who are contributing at a high level, are in structured buckets. The only way to break out of those buckets is to leave or patiently wait for time to pass.

What hurts the young players are the big contracts teams give to players that flop.

Those young players are locked in because of the union agreements and structures of developed players.
