I read an article recently about HBO's difficulties competing with streaming services
It's a tough trade-off for them choosing quantity of content vs. more expensive franchises to carry the brand like Sopranos and Game of Thrones. Competing with the likes of Netflix has forced them re-focus away from expensive prestige series. I don't know if that directly influenced this decision but it seems to be a likely explanation.
