I don't think it has much to do with travel...

but it has a lot to do with creating rules and guidelines that everyone in the conference can/will follow. It becomes a bit of a mess when you are playing another team from another conference who might have a totally different set of rules and guidelines that they are following.

no it's not. it's a way to reduce games, which reduces exposure. It's a simple and easy way to do this
