RE: How hard was it to follow the map?
This is the account from my aunt.

Soon after grandpa passed away, grandpa and grandma’s children gathered together to begin the process of distributing their possessions. My grandmother was 90 when she passed away and my grandpa was 99 years old so they had their worldly possessions and paperwork prepared for their passing. Upon their death, the five siblings had been instructed to go to the safe where all the important paperwork was kept. The safe was opened, and when the box was opened a piece of paper was on the top. The note had instructions – a map with directions. They each looked at each other in amazement. What is this, could this be for real? We were never told about this. Soon they follow the directions:

Go out to the big stump in back of the house and underneath dig a hole until you reach the treasure. They all went outside to look for the tree stump, found what looked like the right stump and started digging until they hit something. After they dug deeper they could see it was a buried toilet tank. As soon as they got enough dirt out from around the lid they opened it. Inside to their amazement were plastic bags filled with what look to be coins. They lifted the bags out one by one and took them inside putting them on the dining room table. When they emptied the tank there were piles of silver coins, US half dollars made before 1965.

But wait, there were more instructions. Next, go to the end of the patio and at the end of the cement slab start digging. So they began digging and soon they hit a pipe. It was a white 5-inch PVC water pipe that went the length of the patio. As soon as they could free the pipe they pulled it out, took it into the house, turned it up on end and out come silver dimes. To put it mildly they were all amazed and surprised. Mom and Dad never mentioned anything about a hidden treasure. They all laughed at the comedy of it all. Here were five children, between the age of 69 and 74 out digging for treasure. What a sight, what a sense of humor their parents had. They are probably looking down from the heavens at this moment laughing at this scene.

The next thing they did was to spread out all the coins with the intention of dividing them up in five piles, one for each family. As they began they realized there was so much it would take a very long time so they came up with the idea to get a scale and weigh out the coins. That worked and it was all divided up. They each got one Kugaran except for Mother and she got two because the coins came up a little short and a second Krugeran made it up to her.

Mother hauled all of her coins home and divided them out evenly and distributed them among her six children.

It was quite a haul because my mom has one sixth of one fifth (1/30th) of the treasure and it’s a pretty big pile of coins.
