A google search will show you the extremes from both sides of the issue in CA.
The state actually gives some leeway of not starting until 7th grade but also gives the options to start as early as Kindergarten. My brother lives in the Bay Area so you can imagine which direction they took.

I actually think there is a lot of groupthink that happens in CA that they fall in line with the loud extreme left
