As far as I can tell BYU has 3 scholarships to award for next year- I don't expect the Hansen recruit to be on scholarship at BYU next year but maybe he is one of the 3-none of us speculators yet know.
But it seemed to me Pope and BYU were far more active in the portal last year as it seemed BYU was reaching out to many more potential players. I wonder if BYU is confident in its more focused approach and Pope already knows he has the beat on a couple so he is backing off the wide net approach. I think BYU is in a good position with the Saunders transfer from Cincinnati but other than him I don't know of BYU moving well on anyone. I thought somebody mentioned BYU was going hard for AJ Lawson, a grad transfer from McNeese State as it was intimated that Heath Schroyer was encouraging Lawson to transfer to BYU, but I can't find anything on Lawson other than an announcement he was entering the portal as a grad transfer. Perhaps that is a done deal and BYU is just working out the grad program paperwork etc and once that is complete, and that can take some time, it will become official.
Perhaps Pope is just then holding the final scholarship to see if he can pick up a late transfer that is really good when most other programs are full- such as Barcello was. Or perhaps if he has 14 scholarship players, 2 of which don't count against the total of 13, he will just award the last one to a walk on for this year as he will need 3 scholarships for RMs next year, all of whom he recruited, and grad transfers are the only seniors he will have next year on scholarship counting against his allocation of 13. If he loads up on players out of the transfer portal with more than 1 year of eligibility he will have no choice but to endure another multiple player migration out of the program next year.
Perhaps I am reading more into it than what is there but it seems he is not as active in the portal as last year.
