There have also been boys in our ward who did not have a father to take them, and their home teacher would see if they wanted to go at least to the activities either in the evening or next day.
It is for a time for MEN and BOYS to learn about being MEN. It is one of the few times that happens. It is not a sexist thing. It is not an exclusionary thing. It is a time and place dedicated to male bonding.
Nowadays we have plenty of other coed stuff, and far too few places and opportunities for this to happen.
I have 4 kids. Oldest two are out of the house, daughter and son and they love camping. Two kids at home, daughter and son. Daughter loves camping and fishing, son does not. I take my daughter on a special fishing trip, just me and her. But I will only take my sons to father-sons campout.
