My understanding is that it’s not the crude oil that is the problem but the
refined gasoline and diesel supply. Look at the price of crude oil per barrel, it’s high but not as high as it’s been in past years. That being the case, we don’t need to pump/drill more but instead get more refineries online. Apparently, aside from just producing crude, Russia exported a lot of refined diesel and gas, so with that out of the equation the price at the pump is up, up, up. US refineries have good capacity but they’re selling to Europe who is desperate for refined fuels. Of course, oil companies are going to be reluctant to invest in all that new infrastructure if the Russia situation turns out to be temporary.
