Median house size is also double with smaller families. $100k @ 19% is $1600/mo P&I. Adjusted for '75 inflation, $8600
$600k at 6% is $3600. But the $600k house is probably 1.5-2.5x the size.

Thanks to the Fed meddling with the market faking low interest rates, everything is more expensive nominally. But the monthly cost of home ownership is actually lower now (more energy efficient homes and appliances, etc.)
