I completely agree. I can't begin to tell you how many problems smart phones cause for kids that are 12 years old when given complete freedom to go and do what they want. Kids sending photos, inappropriate messages, gossip, rumors, etc. The school was basically shut down one time because one kid made up a story about the hispanic kids saying they were bringing weapons to school the next day. It spread and was texted like wild fire. This was in the early cell phone days. Sure things have calmed down a bit now but I still would never get a phone for a 12 year old.
