We can thank large tech companies (Google, Apple, Amazon, etc.) for actively stifling progress as soon as they had their dominant market share by lobbying for weaker IP laws (America Invents Act of 2013, Refusing to do anything to counter a string of anti-innovation SCOTUS Rulings) and supporting legislators who ignore anti-trust laws and step aside while they simply acquire any and all competitors over the last 20 years.
