Boot camp at Catalina Island. Served on troop ships and LST’s. Went ashore under fire on landing craft with the troops. His convoys were attacked by submarines and planes. Was deeply affected by the losses at Iwo Jima after seeing the graves of marines he had landed. Was on a troop ship taking soldiers from Europe for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He hated the Japanese until late in life when he often worked with Japanese businessmen and travelled there. He ended up proudly displaying Japanese art and gifts in his home.
On my mission to Brazil in 1975 I taught a very nice Japanese man who had been a teenage Kamikaze pilot preparing to attack the American invasion fleet (including possibly my father) when the war ended.
