In Pro Sports, everyone is still "in it for themselves", but there are rules and boundaries that you can rely on as a fan. If you sign a player, you know he will almost certainly be there for the length of his contract. Another team cannot simply "poach" your coach if he is under contract by paying a buyout. And if your team has a terrible year, you will get a high draft pick to try and re-stock with talent for the next season.
None of these guardrails exist in college right now. It's just a year-to-year free for all. Boise State actually had their best Wide Reciever quit the team mid-season so he could transfer to TCU next year. If things continue at this rate, it will gradually erode fan support for college athletics. And then all of the money that everyone currently in the system is chasing will start to dry up.
