Let's compare factors.
HC experience in college advantage Pope.
Recruiting, well, Pope seemed to do pretty good, but not really great. I'd say since these players are looking at can I play in the NBA, young has a huge advantage. One Pope never will. but Pope has experience trying to convince them to come. So slightly to Pope.
Experience dealing with paid players. Young, hands down.
Experience in BYU's environment. Pope, but probably not as big as we may think.
X&Os? hard to judge, but Young is going against the best players in the world all the time. so I'll lean to him.
beard growing? definitely Young.
Developing players. I'm still not sold to much on Pope. Seems to need the right assistants to make it work. Not sure about Young on this.
Young will have a learning curve related to college and to BYU. Pope has passed that.
I think Young is a good splashy hire that sings we got a great guy. But we must be patient as he adapts to college.
