may recall, Danny resigned smack dab in the middle of the 1999 NBA season in mid-December. It was a shocker in the sports world at the time. He pointed to the difficulty of the grind on his health and family...it wasn't worth it. He was out of basketball for 3-4 years until coming back as GM of the Celtics where he was very successful.
I've read that Kevin Youngs wife was getting weary of the travel and stresses her husband had, and long absences away from family. The prospect of becoming a HC, with the financial benefits probably felt like a conflict with family and lifestyle balance.
All Danny had to do was step in and say "Hey, if BYU can hit a good number for you guys, your wife could be close to family, and the grind in college is substantially less than the NBA, and BYU would support you more reasonably in your work schedule and living your faith. You could become an absolute legend for BYU and Church fans worldwide with just a reasonable level of success and performing respectably in March. I think that's a win/win for you and family, and a great gig imo. Lmk if you need any help Kev"
