Today's matchups:
3 How Far I'll Go vs 6 Into the Unknown
13 Reflection vs 12 I've Got a Dream
How Far I'll Go - Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda for the 2016 film Moana. Performed in the film by American actress and singer Auliʻi Cravalho. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards and Best Original Song at the 74th Golden Globe Awards and won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
Originally composed as Moana's "I Want" song, following in the long tradition of "I Want" songs in 1990s Disney animated musicals, it replaced an earlier attempt called "More", for which the demo version recorded by Marcy Harriell was released as an outtake on the deluxe version of the soundtrack album. Although Miranda has stressed that he is still "very proud of" the song as a first draft, "More" was not good enough in retrospect because it merely expressed Moana's vague desire to see more since she had already figured out everything about the island.
Into the Unknown - Music and lyrics composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Recorded by American actress and singer-songwriter Idina Menzel and Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora for the 2019 film Frozen II. The song received Academy Award, Critics' Choice Movie Award, Golden Globe Award and Satellite Award nominations for Best Original Song.
Anderson-Lopez and Lopez, who wrote the songs for Frozen, reprised their roles for the sequel Frozen II. They also helped develop the story. Once a foundation for the story emerged, the pair marked out points where songs would be used to move the story forward. The pair needed a song for a major moment for Elsa. Initially, the pair wrote a song called "I Seek the Truth" for the moment. At this point, the concept of Elsa hearing and following a mysterious voice had not been conceived yet. When this plot point was developed, the pair went back to the scene and wrote "Into the Unknown."
