People on the internet: Hollywood needs to stop only making sequels, remakes, and IP based movies!
The problem: these people don’t actually go to the movies.

The Fall Guy came out this weekend. Had everything going for it. Big budget summer kickoff blockbuster. Two A list stars. Completely original, no IP, not a remake. Gets pretty good reviews from both critics and audiences (A- CinemaScore from audiences and 83% certified fresh on RT).

…and it basically completely flopped. $28.5m opening weekend domestic, $65m worldwide. All on a $140m budget. Unless it has insane legs in the next few weeks, it is almost certain to lose money.

Remember this the next time studios announce Toy Story 7, Star Wars spinoff 45, or Avengers 15. Those obviously flop too, but are more likely to make money and less risky overall than completely original material.

People are more likely to go to the movies to see those movies.
