How about "We don't practice any defense, except the 1-3-1, because I really...
...don't give a lick about defense." Being a "step slow" has little to do with it. UT-Arlington was passing the ball around, making the extra pass, and essentially toying with BYU all night because they were also apparently aware that Rose doesn't believe in defense. It was much more about players being completely out of position on defense all night because it's not part of Rose's system.

If you rely on your "athletes" or "starters" and hope they will somehow play defense, even when you don't have any focus on it all season, it's not going to magically happen. Good defense is about creating a system, a philosophy, and a mindset, so when you're struggling on offense or you're down a starter or two, you can still keep yourself in the game.
