There is a difference, though, between institutionalized slavery protected by
law and by a constitution, and endorsed by society, and an illegal, underground practice that isn't entirely obvious or visible. The latter is still despicable, but more closely resembles other types of modern crime (like drug trafficking or terrorism) than it does the institution that the Founding Fathers enshrined in the US constitution and which the South fought to protect.
