I grew up camping
My dad was a college professor so we went on many long family camping trips in the summer.

I liked camping with my family (or just my dad and/or brother) but hated it in the context of scouting.

I still enjoy camping (provided the weather cooperates and the location is scenic). However, my wife didn't grow up camping (or taking any vacations for that matter) and doesn't much care for it. But she generally likes hiking. Conversely, my kids like camping but they don't much like hiking (especially my daughter).

The main problem I have with camping is that it's so much more work in terms of packing, meal prep, and unpacking as compared to hotel and resort-based vacations. This wouldn't be such a big deal if I had as much time off as my dad did, but it sort of sucks when you get home from vacation, have to unpack everything, and then go back to work the next day (after camping, you almost need a vacation from the vacation).

On top of that, when you start getting used to the creature comforts of nice hotel and resort-based vacations (and my kids' favorite vacations are Disney-based, particularly cruises), camping doesn't seem relatively as exciting or enjoyable.
