Ideally, the walkons are there to provide depth

when injuries take out the scholarship players or the scholarship players aren't performing. Occasionally, a walkon ends up being the better talent on the roster. You don't know who will emerge with better training, coaching, etc. The ones that obviously don't have the measurables/talent to compete at the FBS level get cut and the rest get developed.
