When you don't have a true playoff, it's all a beauty contest and preseason rankings have a MAJOR impact on where teams end up.
Top 5 team loses 1st game? Drops a couple spots, and still ahead of most everyone.
UCF going 13-0? --nothing, didn't start high enough in preseason rankings.
Almost all teams are realistically eliminated from playoff contention before the season even starts.
