IMO, whether something is a redemption story isn't dependent on whether society
thinks someone screwed up or not. Or whether the person living the redemption story did anything the majority of society would consider wrong. In France, nobody thinks having an affair is a big deal. But if somebody cheats on their spouse, feels bad and stops doing it while repairing their relationship with their spouse, that's a redemption story.

Hadley let himself down. He let people he loved down. And he went against what he had promised to do. I'm not judging him as an evil person. I don't think he was or is. But he went down a dark path by his personal standards, felt bad about it, suffered consequences and decided to overcome it rather than getting mad about it, making excuses for himself or throwing in the towel.
