What I find is that Ute fans can't seem to not comment
I go to my son's game. Someone is wearing a Utah shirt--I don't feel compelled to say anything to them. They are Ute fans. That is fine for them. I am at the game to see my son, not to play rivalry.
If I wear a BYU shirt, I can almost guarantee a comment is coming from a Ute fan that I don't know from Adam. It doesn't mean it is always mean (though often it is). But the compulsion to say anything about my shirt is crazy. Ute fans can't seem to not say something.

It's not a matter of offense. It's "why do you feel a need to make a comment like that to complete strangers?"
