The chip size stated in their original article seems extremely small to be able to do as many things as they claim. If they had access to the fabrication process it would be much easier to just hijack the existing hardware with malware. Perhaps the article has misinformation about what was found in order to protect how the real hacks were found or how much we know about China's espionage efforts.
