Every year around the 3rd week of Oct. we headed off to our deer camp. I've hunted with family most years since, but have only ever taken a couple deer and an antelope and one of the deer was because everyone else had tagged out. I absolutely love hunting. It is one of my main hobbies, yet I rarely take anything. I buy the tag more as an excuse to get out there. I'd almost rather help someone harvest an animal for some reason.
Something about the strategy of hunting I think is embedded in our DNA and you kind of sense that when you're in the middle of it. Regardless, I wouldn't trade the memories I have of deer camp for anything. They are some of my fondest memories. I love going to football games across the country, but there is something about the hunt that is different. Maybe a more primal instinct that needs to be fulfilled. I don't know.
I love it. I hope my kids love it when they are older. I hope it continues and isn't ruined by those who seems to want to turn us all into hipsters.
