For those who have watched the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, (spoilers)
What did you think of the one about the professor who got replaced by the chicken? That story really stuck with me, for at least two reasons.
1. The incredible brutality of the ending.
But way more important:
2. The fact that so many idiots in the town thought the chicken was better entertainment than the amazing recitation by the professor dude. I really felt like that was us. We have access to the greatest and most enlightening entertainment in the history of the world. We could listen to any classical music, performed by the greatest musicians in history and we can pull it up on youtube any time we want. And instead we watch chickens counting and cat videos and instagram idiots and whatever. We can watch every movie ever made at the touch of a button on netflix or Amazon, and yet we choose to watch really dumb entertainment all the time.
Mindless drivel as entertainment seems to be part of being human.
