It only worked for me well when I used shutter priority on a tripod
Without a tripod I still used shutter priority but I just really put the iso way up.

The problem isn't your telephoto, either your ISO setting is too high or you don't have noise reduction on.

This is a phone shot of the lcd on the back of my camera that shows my pic of the moon. So it’s better than this but
