Arguments for keeping Coach Rose- Even though the last several years have been on a downward trend, Coach Rose is still the most winning coach in BYU history and has still done some good coaching. The downward trend can be directly connected to a recent trend in players leaving early for Europe, which is something that any coach would have fallen victim to. Rose deserves the chance to fix the problem. I think even the most disgruntled fan would have to admit that a team this year with Mika, Bryant, Yoeli, Haws and fill in one more would have likely made the NCAA tournament with a strong seed.
Arguments for replacing Coach Rose-- First, I would state that Coach Rose should be allowed the dignity to retire and have it at least appear to be his choice. That being said, Rose is nearing retirement soon. I think he will likely retire in the next 2-4 years regardless. PLUS, if Yoeli leaves this year, next season will likely be worse than this year. Why not bring in a new coach and inject a little excitement into the program even if the team is not doing well. Without Childs, what is there really to lose? The BYU coaching job has a huge learning curve. Even BYU guys have to learn how to navigate the Honor Code, Admissions, Boosters, etc.. Why not use the rebuilding year as a learning year as well.
It sounds like Yoeli is gone. My initial reaction is to think that is a bad decision for Yoeli and a bad decision for BYU. Either way I will wish him well and cheer for him-- as much as you can cheer for someone who disappears overseas only to appear on radio call-in shows from time to time over the next 10 years. So, if Yoeli is gone, I might advise Rose to retire if I were close to him. Either way, it makes me really sad to think of Rose's career ending this way. I don't see many ways around it though if Yoeli leaves.
