Another idea if you like woodworking...

I built a woodshop in my house when we had it built years ago... A few years ago i purchased an X-Carve CNC machine and it has been a blast.

IMHO... it's more useful than a laser (and less expensive).

There is a large community for hobby CNC projects. It may be worth a look...
