One thing leads to another. If the PSA is high, what do you do about it?
If you do nothing, then you get to live with the anxiety that you might have prostate cancer. If you get the biopsy to check it out then there are complications. Even if it is not a false positive, the numbers are that of 1000 men, about 150 will have prostate cancer, but of the 1000 men only 4 to 5 will die from prostate cancer. So, if you have prostate cancer and treat it, then about 1/3 will have complications and about 4 will die from complications of the prostate cancer treatment or still die from prostate cancer. You have improved your odds of death from 4-5 out of 1000 to 4 in 1000, but the odds of complications are about 50 of every 150 that treat the cancer.

TL;DR we are probably hurting more people than we are helping.
