You also need to factor in that it was re-released multiple times throughout the years. There was no home video
or streaming so if people wanted to see it later they had to go to the theater again.
Given the changes in movie going habits I don't think any movie will ever break Gone With the Winds record of tickets sold without a huge increase in population.
