Whether the claim has merit will depend on any data backing up the assertion, IMO.
I don't think the adventures of our Tariff Man are significant enough to single-handedly trigger a recession, but I'm not an economist, so my opinion on the matter is just speculation.
OTOH the effects of economic policy are not instantaneous, so I don't have an issue overall with analyses that look at effects over time.
