I think it's a huge communication problem, brought on by the fact that he's incredibly stupid. Like all-time stupid and he doesn't realize it. It's been happening to him all season. He doesn't even realize his words have meaning. It's crazy. It's hard because I don't know how much they get to actually talk about religion and that kind of stuff (this seasons has gotten into it way more than previous ones) but he definitely thought they were on the same page religiously and they were clearly not.

I think he was also being completely manipulative and using his religion to do it, almost holding God over Hannah. But again, he may have been too stupid to really realize that's what he was doing.
