While this analysis is interesting, I think it misses the mark.
The real question is whether or not the gap is staying consistent across the distribution of expenditures.

I bet that the winning percentage against the bottom quartile has increased over time and the winning percentage against the top quartile has declined over time. I don't know what the relation looks like in the middle quartiles.

Here's some data through 2013.
