A Cougarnation pep talk inspired by Mike Leach:

I got on Cougarboard early this morning to see at least 4 of the top 10 posts about how great Utah Football is. I'm sorry...did I wander onto the Utes fan page?! I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great football team the Utes have. I think we need a pep talk.

But the Utes are just so good. They have better recruits and way more money.

Mike Leach has a tweet pinned referencing his air raid philosophy (https://twitter.com/Coach_Leach/status/1003391155352920065): "If he (the enemy) is superior in strength, evade him. If his forces are united, separate them. Attack him where he is unprepared; appear where you are not expected." Cougarnation, we BUILT the air raid philosophy! For the first time in years, we finally have a quarterback who can execute that plan! We even have backups who can sling the rock! Yes, the Utes might have a fantastic team. Heck, from what you all are saying, their whole team is going to get drafted this year. Who cares?! If that's true, then we'll beat them next year since everyone is gone! It's like you're all giving up before the game is even played. Is that how you face challenges in your life, giving up before you start cause you don't think you'll be able to handle it? If you have one or two failures, do you just give up and throw out the rest of the year?

But I'm just trying to be realistic. I don't want to get my hopes crushed again. I just expect mediocrity so then I'm not disappointed.

Oh please, grow up! You sound like a YSA kid at my local singles ward, waiting for his/her life to start. Is that the attitude you have when you start something new? You just expect to suck and then maybe if you're slightly above average you're somewhat happy about the results? Do we just expect our team to suck every year? I don't know of any successful team/person in history who had those kind of expectations and then achieved greatness. Not one. Herein lies my main point: just BELIEVE. You don't have to throw on those blue goggles and expect us to win a naitonal championship, but at least believe we're going to have a successful season! Maybe we could learn something about attitude and belief from the Utes. Don't we hear every year how they're going to the Rose Bowl? The best they've ever done is make it to the Fiesta bowl over a decade ago, but their fanbase still believes each and every year. That belief is contagious (just like doubt can be contagious). Have you ever considered that this could be a contributing factor as to why BYU hasn't performed consistently? We're so busy dragging the team down they have to work twice as hard to have a postive attitude. Do you think that's why we have underperformed at home? At away games, the Cougs who BELIEVE are the ones that show up! At home, it feels like the fans start giving up after one bad quarter. Believe, dang it! Even if we're down 21 at half, we can come back and win!! I firmly believe that belief from the fans can help their team to victory.

Zach Wilson is evidence of belief. The kid grew up a Ute fan. A YEWT fan! The kid is soaring with belief and confidence in himself and in his team. You hear zero doubt in his attitude, interviews, comments, twitter, etc. He geniuinely believes. He has no time for doubt and discouragement becasue he's constantly bettering himself and leading his team to victory. He had some bad games last year (remember Northern Illinois?), but the kid learns from that and moves on! If he had been a discouraged kid and beat himself up the rest of the season, he would never have had his perfect bowl game. And you know what? His teammates have bought into that attitude and all improved!

But BYU just doesn't win the big games

You seem to remember BYU's failures very well...what about the successes? Did we not beat Wisconsin in their house? Have we not beat Oklahoma in their backyard? Did we not destroy Texas in their homeland? Learn from bad games, but don't dwell on them! Look forward with hope and belief! Don't listen to the haters!

I often read Cougarboard but have never posted. I created an account so I could say this.
