I had the chance to talk to him about the game, the staff, and what the players think about being Independent.
Here are some takeaways: Players felt that Liberty came out with much more enthusiasm and wanted it more. Guys were surprised by how well they played, almost expecting them to just come in and take a loss. Coaches were on top of them but it didn’t feel like it came together like it did with Utah State. Kinda felt like they let down both the fans and coaches with their play.
This player says everyone on the team loves Kalani. They would do anything to keep him as their head coach. They get annoyed with some fans and media who are calling for his head. They all support him and fully expect him to be extended.
When I asked about Independence and if it was hard to get excited about games he said no. He said everyone competes every game and their goal is to get a win. It’s easier to get motivated to play Utah State or Boise than it is to play Liberty. But he laughed when I asked if returning to the mountain west and playing for a MW Title would motivate them more. Kinda rolled his eyes at that suggestion.
Overrall it was a nice chat. Good kid, not a starter as he is just off his mission, but hopefully he has a good career playing. We will see if things become more serious with my niece or not.
