Tokushoryu was ranked Maegashira 17 (lowest top-division rank) this tournament and entered the final day as sole leader with a 13-1 record. Since both Yokozuna's had pulled out of the tournament, they had Tokushoryu face the highest ranking remaining rikishi, Takakeishō (an Ozeki who has his sights possibly on a Yokozuna run sometime this year). 

If Tokushoryu lost, he would have to have a playoff with Shodai for the championship. It was almost a given, considering Tokushoryu's draw. Shodai was waiting ringside in anticipation. But Tokushoryu'a miracle run continued and he won a hard fought match, then immediately burst into tears. It was incredible to watch.
