That's all very tender and stuff, but you and your wife need sleep or you're....

going to become so tired you won't be able to "parent" well.  Try this:

- Snuggle the baby until they start to get drowsy

- Lay them in their crib

- If they drift off to sleep, let them.

- If they wake up and cry, let them cry for a few minutes.  (the older they are the longer you should let them cry)

- If they are still crying after the pre-determined length then go in to their room and gently rub their back, head, etc for a minute or two but don't pick them up, then leave the room.

- Repeat as necessary.

The goal is to help them learn to sleep on their own without causing them to feel abandoned.  If your newborn is truly just "new", then just enjoy holding them and try this tactic to wean them off when they're older.
