I read a similar story from a German POW, I think, in Idaho
However, after the Americans found the Concentration Camps and published the news, the Americans treated the POWs very poorly.
Many POWs talked about how the tenor of the Americans changed in treating that after the US Army went into the camps. The German POWs didn't believe the American guards/civilians in towns when they told them about the camps as the reason for their 180 degree change in treatment.
