Make sure you take a look at your town/city's masterplan, especially roads, to see what's planned in the next 5 yrs. Avoid planned major road construction. I'm surrounded by it right now and it sucks. Also, make sure you know who owns any undeveloped land in the area. If the field just down the road is owned by the local school district, that can be good. If however it's owned by Walmart or Waste Management, not so good.
