I'm honestly glad you brought this up. I've avoided for lack of knowledge by
younger generation. I remember when the NCAA was a big supporter of NAACP (national association of advancement of colored people). TV stations rolled and rolled commercials of NAACP during college games. Now the power conferences, TV execs, media focuses only on winning. If they can tear down and financially suffocate smaller programs they feel like winners. The DI one teams used to have 99 scholarships now it's limited to 85. The former DI schools , who are now FCS teams have been regulated 63 scholarships.

Then title 10 came into play. Schools dropped football and other sports to ensure the number of female athletes was equal to male athletes. Somehow that rule was believed to increase scholarships for females. All it did was reduce scholarships--for males and particularly for African Americans.

Coaches now talk of dropping any program that isn't g5, not playing FCS teams anymore, money generated by avoiding smaller games, etc and etc. All this does is hurt the number of scholarships for everyone and especially minorities-- but hey, we are elite, in a class by our own. I suspect if someone did a study of how college scholarships have decreased, that number would be the same as crime rate among college age students.
