I think I got this now... whenever BYU’s defense does well — which could be that their opponent just sucked — this is an indication that Kalani “took over the reigns of the defense”.
But whenever BYU’s defense doesn’t play very well — regardless of opponent — this would indicate that Tuiaki was at the helm for that particular game.
I for one am impressed with the progressive leadership of BYU football where the role of defensive coordinator is merely a game by game decision. Consistency like this one is one of the many hallmarks of a successful and sustainable football program.
