I’ll admit, I’m as pleasantly surprised as anyone regarding Zach Wilson’s
remarkable YOY improvement.

I think this is at least partially due to it being so long since a BYU QB showed significant YOY improvement as a passer. Let’s face it, the 2010-19 decade was characterized by BYU QB’s, for a variety of reasons, not having significant improvement as a passer over the previous year (and/or not being able to complete a season with improved passing skills due to injury). I believe this, in part, explains why that was such a lackluster decade for BYU football.

In fact, I’d argue that the last BYU QB that seemed to significantly and consistently improve YOY was John Beck. But even he didn’t have the kind of improvement between consecutive seasons that we’re currently seeing from Wilson.

I’d even go so far as to say that the best examples of YOY QB improvement in BYU history, such as Steve Young from 1982 to 1983 or Steve Sarkesian from 1995 to 1996, aren’t as impressive as Zach Wilson from 2019 to 2020.
