UW: heard you guys are looking for games. WSU had to cancel and we’re looking for a game this weekend

BYU: we’d love to play. Let’s go!

UW: Ok great. As you know, the Pac12 stipulates that for OOC games you have to abide by our testing protocols, you have to play at our place, the game has to be on our conference affiliated TV network, and we get 100% of the game revenue.

BYU: yep, it’s not ideal but we saw the Pac12’s stipulations when they announced they’d allow OOC games. We’re fine with all of those. Let’s play.

UW: the last stipulation is that if another Pac12 opponent opens up by Thursday at midnight we have to cancel our game with you and play the conference opponent.

BYU: yeah, we know about that stipulation as well. That’s the challenging part. We know the Utah vs ASU game is likely to be cancelled and you’ll have to cancel your game with us anyway. Is there any way of offering us a guaranteed game?

UW: we asked the Pac12 and they said no.

BYU: ok thanks for asking, but here’s the challenge. Since we didn’t have a game scheduled this week or next week we gave our players and coaches the week off and some have already flown home or have purchased flights to go home. Logistically, it will take some time to get everybody rounded up and back in Provo. Are you sure you can’t guarantee the game? It will cost these kids a lot of money to rearrange their flights. And it will cost a lot of money to start trucking out our equipment to Seattle, ask these kids who are out of town to change their flights and come back to Provo, plus we’ll have to arrange a chartered flight and hotels etc with no guarantee that we’ll actually have a game. That’s a lot of sunk costs in a season where every team is losing money. (Clemson lost $300k when FSU cancelled their game.)

UW: Yeah. We get it. Sorry. Pac12 won’t let us guarantee the game.

BYU: we’re almost positive the Utah vs ASU game will get cancelled and you’ll end up being forced to play Utah anyway. How bout you come play BYU in Provo. You can still air the game on your network. You can keep all of the revenue. And then if ASU cancels their game, you’ll be in Utah already and can play 40 miles north against the Utes.

UW: We’d actually be open to that idea. Let us check on that.

BYU: awesome, let us know what you hear. Meanwhile, we’re going to round up all our players in town and practice. We feel like something will get worked out. (BYU players get excited and proceed to tweet the eyeball emojis at the prospect of playing a good UW team Thanksgiving weekend).

UW: we asked the Pac12 and they wouldn’t budge. They said no.

BYU: ok we tried. Looks like things won’t work out this week without a guaranteed game.

(Within 24 hours we know Utah got paired up with UW anyway).
